Bala Kotharu

Region 1 Representative - Northeastern USA

Bala is currently working for Black & Veatch (Global Leader in EPC services for Energy, Water and Telecom) as an Electrical EngineerBala graduated from Univ. of Massachusetts Lowell with a Masters Degree in Power & Energy Engineering and Bachelors’ from JNTU, India with specialization in Power & Energy Engineering. Bala has been with the electric utility industry for over 4 years and an active member of IEEE for over 9 years. His interests are Lightning Protection, Grounding analysis, Substation Design, System Studies, Optimization techniques and applications in renewable energy forecasting.

I am currently a junior at the University of Connecticut pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering with interests in Power engineering. I’m involved in the honors program at the University and hope to get involved in research this year.

I’m a highly driven student with very good organizational and time management skills. I have strong interpersonal skills and have experience working in a team setting.

Dr. Dehghanian is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, George Washington University, Washington DC, USA. Dr. Dehghanian received his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, in 2017, the M.Sc. degree from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2011, and the B.Sc. degree from the University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran in 2009, all in Electrical Engineering.

His research interests include planning and operation of resilient and sustainable electricity grids with high penetration of renewables; smart electricity grid applications in power transmission and distribution systems; reliability and resilience modeling and assessment of electric power systems, critical infrastructures, and cyber-physical systems; synchrophasor technology for power system protection and control; and data analytics and data science applications in energy systems.

Region 3 Representative - Southern USA

Lucas Sweet graduated from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering in 2019. While in school he became an active member of IEEE in 2017 and served as the schools PES chapter chair from 2018-2019. Post-graduation Lucas has been actively seeking more volunteer roles within IEEE at the section level and nationally. He has an interest in power distribution, grid reliability, power storage, and distributed power generation.

Mahmoud Kabalan

Mahmoud Kabalan

Region 4 Representative - Mid Western USA

Mahmoud Kabalan is an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of St Thomas. Mahmoud is passionate about using renewable energy sources and microgrids as a means for a sustainable and just future. He was awarded the 2016 IEEE Philadelphia Young Electrical Engineer of the Year Award. Mahmoud holds a PhD degree in Engineering and was presented with the College of Engineering Outstanding Doctoral Student Award from Villanova University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Villanova University along with an Engineer Diploma from the Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon. His areas of expertise are electric power systems, power electronics and microgrids.

Chris Lopez earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering at Wayne State University. He is an Electrical Engineer at DTE Energy, working to improve, maintain, and advance the electrical infrastructure in southeast Michigan. As an IEEE member, he is passionate about students who give their time to IEEE and support engineering students on their campus. Abdur Rehman

Abdur Rehman

Region 6 Representative - Western USA

Abdur Rehman, PE is a Power Systems Engineer in Seattle, WA USA. He earned his BSEE from WSU-Pullman in 2013 and MSEE in 2017. Abdur has been very active with IEEE in the Seattle section early in his career. He joined IEEE PES Society as the YP Representative and was instrumental in securing the IEEE PES Outstanding Chapter Award in 2014. He was recommended to lead the IEEE Seattle Section as the Young Professional Chair in 2016, making Seattle YP one of the most active affinity groups in Region 6. Abdur is currently the Past Chair of Seattle YP affinity group and Vice-Chair of Membership Development for Region 6, and the part of the global IEEE Industry Engagement subcommittee. Abdur Rehman is a Power Systems Engineer at Puget Sound Energy and is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Washington and California.

Ankit Patel

Ankit Patel

Region 7 Representative - Canada

Ankit Patel is M.Engg. Student in Internetworking engineering at Dalhousie University in Canada. He did his B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Gujarat University in India. He currently serves as a PES Membership Development Committee member, treasurer of Canadian Atlantic Section (Region 7) PES Chapter and chair of joint PES/IAS SB chapter in Dalhousie University. He had worked as ambassador of IEEE Day 2017 for Canadian Atlantic Section. Also he had formed two PES chapters in India and Canada. He had worked extensively at Student Branch, Chapter, Section and Region level as chair, advisor and volunteer positions. Ankit joined IEEE from 2013 and since then he has been member of IEEE, PES, VOLT and HKN under this organization. He is awarded by Gujarat Section (Region 10) for Outstanding Contribution in 2014 and Chapter Outstanding Engineer award by Gujarat Section PES Chapter in 2016. Apart from these activities, he works with Altumcore Technologies (India) as a Business Growth Strategist. He is also associated with some humanitarian organizations and NGOs in both India and Canada.

Region 8 Representative - Europe

Dr. Pedram Asef received a B.Sc (Hons.) in Electrical Engineering from Shiraz University, Shiraz, Iran, in 2012, the M.Sc degree from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, China, in 2015, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTech (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 2018. He is currently working in Electro Power Systems S.A., Engineeirng and Reseach Center, in Milan, Italy. He won the Chinese Presidential award and Shanghai Jiao Tong University fellowship in 2013 and 2015, respectively. He was also employed by the State Key Laboratory of Advanced Electromagnetic Engineering and Technology (AEET) in China. His previous projects were granted by Texas State Center for Port Management (USA) on Electrical Machinery Design and Optimization and Renewable Energy Systems. Currently, he is working for Energy Processing and Integrated Circuits Group (EPIC) at UPC. Additionally, he is an active reviewer for IEEE Transaction on Energy Conversion, and IEEE Transaction on Magnetics. His fields of interest include Electrical Machinery and Machine Drives, Renewable Energy Systems, Multi-Objective Optimization methods, Machine learning, Electromagnetics, and Power Systems. Recently, he has published +10 research papers at international conferences and journals, and registered two patents.

In IEEE, Anwar is currently working as a volunteer in IEEE YP UAE Section, R8. He is dealing with all the activities of IEEE DAY in the UAE SECTION. In 2012, he received the IEEE Day Photo Contest Award. Only 10 members were selected all over the world for this award. Jaqueline Cardoso is Ph.D in Energy Engineering from Federal University of ABC – Brazil (2017) and founder of JJ Engenharia Eletrica. Jaqueline is an active IEEE volunteer since 2009. She has served several volunteer activities and leadership positions in different organizational units including Student Branch (UFABC- BRAZIL), South Section Brazil, Young Professionals and PES Society.

Region 9 Representative - Costa Rica

Melany Carvajal Galeano is an Industrial Maintenance Engineer graduated from the Technological Institute of Costa Rica. She is currently working in the regional photovoltaic energy company ENERTIVA as a Design Engineer in photovoltaic projects.
Her volunteering at IEEE began in 2015, as a member of the Student Branch of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica and as a promoter of the creation of the PES Chapter of her university.
She has developed in Leadership and Project Management positions, participating in the promotion of programs such as Women in Power, the development of activities and membership. She is currently in charge of the Student Activities Committee, she belongs to board member of IEEE Costa Rica Section, and Vice chair of the Professional Chapter of Power and Energy.

Shah Faisal

Shah Faisal

Region 10 Representative - China

Shah Faisal is from Pakistan and is a PhD Research Scholar in Electrical Engineering at Southeast University Nanjing P.R. China. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in electrical engineering from Pakistan and China respectively. He is a Chinese Scholarship Student (CSC) for Master and PhD respectively.  He is a Graduate Student Member of IEEE and IEEE-PES, He worked as an Engineer, Lecturer, Trainee Engineer and Internee in different organisations of Pakistan.

John Benedict Boggala

Region 10 Representative- Asia and Pacific

John Benedict Boggala is from India and works for Amazon as its Manager for Devices and Digital Platform Support at Hyderabad. He also works as an independent consultant for grids maintenance and control.  He has been volunteering for IEEE and IEEE PES since 2011 and has served in various positions and volunteering roles. He currently serves as the associate editor for IEEE Potentials and a contributor to IEEE Spectrum magazine. He also serves as the vice-chair for IEEE Xtreme. He served as the chair for AIYEHUM which was a Humanitarian Project Contest. He currently serves on the PES MDC Board and the Region 10 Young Professional Team as its South Asia Coordinator. He also serves on the Region 10 Membership Development Board, He has served on the Humanitarian Activities and Educational Activities Board in the past. His areas of research and interest include data analysis and management, power electronics, and engineering management.

Adil Usman is a PhD Research Scholar at Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, India. He is an active Student Member of IEEE, past nine years and currently a Graduate Student Member of IEEE since seven years. He has held many IEEE responsibilities under various sections of India which includes, Bangalore, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi in the capacity of Student Branch Chairman, YP Committee, Publicity Committee and PES-IAS Committee. He has served globally in different IEEE Regions like R10, R6 and R8 in the capacity of the Track Chair, Technical Program Chair, Session Chair, Public Outreach and Volunteer Management & Engagement Committee. He has an active and key responsibility in IEEE SIGHT (Communities of Practice) and is currently leading some Technical Humanitarian Tracks in IEEE GHTC (R6), IEEE SusTech (R6) and WEA (South America). He is the Corresponding Member from India for IEEE PES- Electric Machinery Committee (EMC) and also an EMC member for IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS). He is currently involved in the Operations Committee of IEEE Smart Village, taking up the responsibility of certain ongoing projects in India.

Region 10 Representative – Asia and Pacific Islands

W.M. Dev Sugandhika Jayalath is an Electrical and Electronic Engineer who currently works in Brantel Lanka (PVT) Limited, Sri Lanka. He has graduated with BSc (Hons) degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka in 2019. With his IEEE membership, he is also holding memberships in IEEE PES, IAS, PELS, IES, RAS, and TEMS. And he is the founder and former chair of IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, a Member of IEEE PELS Students Subcommittee and an Editorial Committee Member in IEEE Young Professionals Sri Lanka. And also, he is the Communication and Documentation Lead in IEEE YESIST12- Maker Fair 2019 and 2020.  He has vast experiences with his volunteering in IEEE conferences such as “International Conference on Information and Automation for Sustainability 2018, Sri Lanka”, “IEEE R10 Humanitarian Technology Conference 2018, Sri Lanka and 2019, Indonesia”. Moreover, he has volunteered in serving as the IEEE PES Day 2020 Region 10 Country Representative, Ambassador of IEEE PES Day 2019, Section Ambassador in IEEE Day 2019, Section Ambassador of IEEE IAS Humanitarian Technology Contest 2019, Lead Ambassador of IEEE Collabratec, IEEE Brand Ambassador, Section Ambassador of IEEE TEMS, IEEE PES Zero Hungers Day Ambassador and so on. With the true meaning of the words, he is an enthusiastic and passionate volunteer.
